The main purpose of a PowerPoint presentation is entertainment. Intellectual content is an unwarranted distraction. In preparing a PowerPoint presentation, aesthetics should transcend substance.
The background colour scheme and logo for your slides should be selected for maximum emetogenic potential. Anyway, I have been missing for quite a while now. Been busy. And lazy.

Singapore media, in typical fashion, started off by praising it via quotes from some people and then reported that some are going out of Singapore to avoid the impending crowd and the inconvenience of the road closure (more on this later) but, as always, ended off strongly by saying that the former is in minority and confidently predicted its success.

And you know what? I noticed quotes were obtained from Westerners only. Why? They couldn’t get locals enthusiastic enough about it? Locals, who are probably more practical?

The track was first used on Friday as a practice run for the races. Roads around the area were closed from Tuesday onward, with limited access of public transport. Remember that the race route cuts through shopping malls and hotels. Business owners around the area were told to prepare for booming business. However, what happened is that not only there wasn’t increase in business for most of them, business in fact fell. Ello? Is that really a surprise?

In one article, it seems that the business owners are at fault because they were not entreprising enough (e.g. it was pointed that one shop had increase of business because he has changed all his merchandise to F1 related ones). Fair enough. So in view of F1 being here for at least another 4 years, they should innovate or move out. I suggest the latter. Why the hassle when you can be at Orchard? Hell, even Tampines Mall, Parkway Parade and AMK Hub are so happening nowadays. Who need to innovate just for the once a year F1 event?

Incidentally, it may be due to my poor memory but I don’t recall any attention in the media on the much inconveniece caused to office workers and shoppers. It’s all glowing reports about how great the F1 was.

A final note: anecdotal evidents point that it is way much better watching the race at home than to be at the stand. You see nothing at the stand because the cars were too fast! It is not unreasonable to expect that in future, only hardcore F1 fans will attend. Others, who went for its novelty, may just stay away and watch on tv. Sure, tv stations gain but once again local business may just lose out. Time to ship out.
